Deborah King was hit hard by the portrayal of Mary (well-acted by Mo'Nique), the mother of Precious, as a cold and cruel presence in her daughter's life. Jealous of her daughter "stealing" her man--the father who has twice impregnated his daughter, Mary's behavior echoes what King herself experienced in the family dynamic she grew up in.
